General Rules

  • Alcohol, non-prescription drugs and tobacco products are not permitted.
  • Food and drinks are permitted only in the Lobby. Water in spill resistant, unbreakable containers is permitted in all other areas of the facility.
  • Injuries, accidents or equipment failures must be immediately reported to Campus Recreation staff.
  • Campus Recreation is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Personal belongings are not permitted in activity areas, except in storage cubicles, and must be kept in a locker. Please use the daily use lockers which are free of charge.
  • Please consult a physician prior to engaging in physical activity. The Department of Campus Recreation is not responsible for accidents or injuries that occur due to the nature of the activity.
  • Proper non-marking athletic shoes are required in all activity areas.
  • Mature and respectful conduct is expected and required at all times.
  • Smoking is prohibited.
  • All patrons must comply with staff requests. The Campus Recreation staff has authority over facility conduct and use of equipment. Failure to comply may result in suspension of Marshall Recreation Center privileges.
  • A current, valid Marshall University student ID or Marshall Recreation Center key tag is required to enter the facility. Attempting to enter the facility using false identification will result in confiscation and/or suspension of membership privileges.
  • The use of Campus Recreation phones for personal use is prohibited.
  • When using equipment or facilities, please be aware and considerate of other patrons who may be waiting to use this equipment.

Main Gymnasium Courts

  • Courts are prioritized for informal recreation in sports of basketball, and volleyball.
  • Basketball games are played to 12 points – win by two or 15 straight.
  • Volleyball games will be played to 15 points – best two out of three wins.
  • Winning teams may stay on the court for no more than two consecutive games.
  • Shirts must be worn at all times. Mesh jerseys can be checked out at Equipment Issue.
  • Hanging on nets or rims is prohibited.
  • Personal belongings are prohibited and must be stored in a locker or in the available storage cubbies located on the West side of court. Daily lockers are FREE of charge and highly recommended.
  • Requests for volleyball and badminton equipment set-up will be accommodated when possible.

Racquetball

  • Eye protection is highly recommended.
  • Shirts and non-marking athletic shoes are required.
  • Reservations for racquetball courts can be made in person at the Welcome Desk or over the phone at 304-696-4732.
  • Reservations are accepted no more than one day in advance.
  • One court may be reserved per person per day.
  • Reservations are valid for one hour.
  • Reservations are honored for a maximum of ten minutes. After this ten-minute grace period, the reservation is lost and the court opens to other patrons.

Locker Rooms

  • Patrons may use a daily locker at no charge. Daily lockers, which are equipped with Digi-Locks and allow users to choose their own combination, are located in both men’s, women’s and family locker rooms. Please pay attention to the locker number and combination entered. Users should shield the lock as they enter their combination.
  • Daily lockers may not be used to store items overnight. Lockers will be emptied nightly and items will be confiscated.
  • There is a $10 storage and retrieval fee. This fee must be paid prior to receipt of confiscated items.
  • All contents removed from daily lockers and rented lockers will be held for one academic quarter and then given to charity.
  • Food and drink are prohibited in locker rooms.
  • All lockers must be renewed by the end of each term or they will be cleaned out and re-issued. Items cleared from expired lockers will be kept for one quarter and then given to charity.
  • Lockers can be rented on a term basis at the Welcome Desk. Towel service is included at no additional charge with term locker rental.
  • Towel service is provided for $10 a month and free with a locker. Shower towels are available at equipment issue and should be returned to a towel return bin.
  • The family locker room is available for the use of patrons bringing children or dependents into the facility.

Aquatic Center

  • Lifeguards have the responsibility and authority to remove anyone for behavior that is deemed either unsafe or inappropriate.
  • Use of the pool is prohibited unless supervised by a Campus Recreation lifeguard or authorized instructor, who must be present at all times during use of the pool.
  • An adult must directly supervise children judged to be less than 12 years of age at all times.
  • The use of flotation devices by non-swimmers is prohibited. This includes life jackets, water wings, baby floats, inner tubes, kick-boards, pull buoys, etc. Exceptions: proficient swimmers engaging in exercise or training programs and persons with disabilities.
  • Animals are not allowed in the pool or pool area except for the express purpose of assisting or aiding persons with disabilities.
  • No food or beverages are allowed in the pool area except water in a spill-resistant, unbreakable container. No glass may be brought onto the pool deck.
  • Patrons are required to shower before entering the water.
  • No running on the pool deck.
  • Patrons must remove shoes before entering the pool area.
  • No diving anywhere. Pool has a max depth of 3’6”.
  • Emergency alert system – 3 whistles. Patrons must clear the pool.
  • Swimmers in lanes with more than three swimmers must swim in a circular manner.

Strength and Conditioning Area

  • All participants must be 16 years of age or older or accompanied by a Campus Recreation Personal Trainer.
  • All Personal Trainers must be hired through the Campus Recreation Department.
  • Appropriate athletic attire must be worn at all times. Generally, this consists of closed-toe athletic shoes, athletic pants or shorts and a t-shirt, sweatshirt or tank top. Patrons are not allowed to exercise in jeans, dress pants, button-down shirts, sports bras, extensive cutoffs, skirts, dress shoes or open-toe shoes.
  • Patrons should use extreme caution in lifting weights to avoid any potential injuries to themselves or others.
  • All dumbbells and weights must be returned to the appropriate storage area after use.
  • Use of weight collars is required at all times.
  • Chalk is prohibited.
  • Water in a spill-resistant, unbreakable container is the only drink permitted. No food is permitted.
  • All patrons must wipe down the equipment with a towel after use. Please be considerate to other patrons.
  • All equipment must be used in the manner for which it is designed. Do not attempt to modify equipment.
  • Standing on benches or equipment frames is prohibited.
  • Personal belongings must be kept in a locker. The staff is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Spotters are recommended on all lifts.
  • Do not attempt to use equipment if you are unfamiliar with the proper use. Please seek Fitness Specialist for assistance.
  • Dropping weights is prohibited, as it damages the equipment and the floor. Also, please refrain from propping the weights up against the walls, mirrors or pillars.
  • Top loading additional weight onto the weight stack machines is prohibited.
  • All equipment must remain in the area it was placed. Do not move equipment from one location to another.
  • When using cardiovascular equipment, please be aware and considerate of other patrons who may be waiting to use this equipment.
  • During periods of high use, a 30 minute maximum will be instituted for all equipment.

Group Exercise Studios

  • Participants are highly encouraged to arrive to class on time. Late participants may be denied entry to class, at the instructor’s discretion, due to the importance of a sufficient warm-up period.
  • It is highly recommended that participants stay for the entire Group Fitness class to ensure participation in the proper cool-down phase of class.
  • All Group Exercise class participants must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Soft-soled, closed-toe athletic shoes are required for all cardiovascular and resistance training classes. Hard-soled closed-toe athletic shoes are recommended for all SPINNING classes. Shoe removal may be appropriate in Yoga and flexibility training classes, at the instructor’s discretion.
  • Towels are recommended for all classes and may be picked up at the Fitness Area counter on the second floor.
  • All equipment must remain in the studios and must be returned to its proper location after use. Equipment from other areas may not be brought into the studios. All equipment should be used for the manner for which it is designed.
  • Studio D is unlocked 24/7 for drop in use for everyone when program is not scheduled.

Group Fitness

  • To enter a Group Fitness class, participants must wait outside of the studio until the instructor allows everyone inside. Please form lines going toward the end of the hallway; participants may not save spaces in line for friends.
  • Group Fitness class entry is on a drop-in basis and will be open on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Group Fitness class size is limited to 20 participants in SPINNING classes, and 30 participants in all other classes.
  • All Group Fitness classes are free and only require proper access to the facility.
  • Campus Recreation reserves the right to cancel any class on the basis of low attendance.

Instructional Programs/Wellness Classes

  • A 100% refund if class is canceled by Campus Recreation or if withdrawing prior to the registration deadline.
  • No refund is given if dropped prior to second class.
  • No refunds will be given after the second class except for physician-verified illness. There are no refunds on CPR or First Aid clinics.
  • Late registrations are not eligible for refunds. No refunds on any single session class unless requested prior to registration deadline.

  • Any sessions that have not been used or scheduled are non-refundable but are good for 1 year after purchase date.

Running Track

  • Jog and walk clockwise on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
  • Jog and walk counter-clockwise Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.
  • Inner lane is designated for walkers; middle lane for joggers and outer lane designated for runners.
  • No side-by-side running or jogging.
  • Faster joggers have right of way; pass on the inside lanes.
  • Stretching areas are located near the track entrance.

  • Use of the elevator is restricted to patrons with disabilities, older populations, Marshall University service staff, and Campus Recreation staff.

Entrance Requirements—Student, Faculty/Staff Entry

  • All students and Faculty/Staff must provide a current, valid Marshall University ID to enter the building. The ID will be swiped through a card reader to determine its validity.
  • Students who have yet to receive or have lost their ID should get a temporary card or receipt from ID Services, located in the Student Center, indicating that a card is being processed.
  • If you do not have ID with you, you are allowed to purchase a $5.00 Self Sponsored pass
  • Full-time undergraduate and graduate students have membership privileges included in their tuition.
  • Part-time graduate and graduate students may gain access only by purchasing a membership. The fees associated with purchasing a membership are not automatically included in their tuition, as is the case for full time undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Attempting to enter the facility using false identification will result in confiscation and/or suspension of membership privileges.

Entrance Requirements—Other

  • Alumni, associates and affiliates must have a Marshall Recreation Center key tag to access the facility; key tags are scanned into a computer in order to verify membership status and identification.
  • If an error message appears on the monitor, such as “membership expired,” members will be referred to the Member Services Desk.
  • Attempting to enter the facility using false identification will result in confiscation and/or suspension of membership privileges.

Complimentary Pass

  • The Member Services office and full-time staff may issue complimentary passes to prospective members.
  • A complimentary pass may not be used in place of a guest pass (this is not intended for guests who would like a free pass, but for prospective members who are legitimately interested in joining).
  • If a prospective member requests a complimentary pass, they must speak to someone in the Member Services Office 24 hours in advance of the visit.
  • A photo ID must be shown at time of entry, and the complimentary pass user must sign the waiver form before being allowed to use the facility.

Sponsored Guest Passes

  • Patrons may sponsor a maximum of three guests per day for $10.00 each. This is a one-time use pass.
  • Sponsored guests must be accompanied by the sponsoring member in order to use the facility.
  • The sponsoring member must accompany the guest in the facility at all times.
  • Both the guest(s) and the sponsoring member are required to fill out and sign guest waiver forms before being admitted to the building.
  • Sponsoring of guests may be restricted, at the discretion of Campus Recreation staff, to prevent facility overcrowding during busy times. Patrons will be notified of impending restrictions well in advance.

Self-Sponsored Pass

  • Students, faculty and staff may purchase a self-sponsor single use pass for a fee of $6.00 for students and $10 for Faculty/Staff. (this pass is not available to alumni or community members)
  • They must show a valid Marshall ID and sign the guest waiver form before being admitted.
  • They do not need to be accompanied by a member to use the facility.

Children/Dependents

  • Members' children and dependents who are aged 15 and under may register to access the facility at no charge; a birth certificate is required for age verification. 
  • Children are allowed access any time of day, but must be accompanied by an adult over the age of 18 at all times while in the facility. 
  • Children 16-18 years of age access the building for a fee and do not need supervision while in the building. They will, however, need an adult to sign the required waiver prior to joining, in the event the child wishes to climb the rock wall or when membership lapses.
  •  If in a paid program, children and dependents aged 15 and under are not required to be supervised by a parent, guardian, or designated adult (member). However that person must remain in the facility during the class.
  •  Children must be escorted to/from scheduled instructional classes by their parent, guardian, or a designated adult.
  •  Children who are not members may use the facility if they are sponsored as guests and pay the $10.00 fee.

Sponsored Guests and Dependent

  • Patrons are responsible for their children’s’ and/or guests’ conduct and any damage to or loss of property that may result in their guests’ actions. Disciplinary action may result in the loss of guest or membership privileges.

Equipment/Locker/Towel Loan

  • In order to check out equipment and lockers, patrons must provide a form of picture identification or Marshall Recreation Center key tag as collateral. Acceptable forms of identification include one of the following: Marshall University Student or Faculty/Staff ID, driver’s license, state ID, or a Marshall Recreation Center key tag.
  • When equipment is returned, the equipment is inspected for damages.
  •  We offer free daily-use lockers equipped with a Digi-Lock, where you can input your own 4-digit code.
  • Daily lockers may not be used to store items overnight. Lockers will be emptied nightly and items will be confiscated. All items removed from lockers will be held for 1 month and then given to charity if not claimed.
  • Locker rentals are also available at the Welcome Desk. For a fee you can have your own locker with a built-in combination lock. This allows you to store items overnight. All lockers must be renewed by the end of each term or they will be cleaned out and re-issued.
  • The family changing rooms with adjacent day use lockers are available for the use of patrons bringing children or dependents into the facility. Children over the age of 4 must use same-sex locker rooms.
  • Cell phone/camera use in the locker rooms is strictly prohibited.
  • Towel service is included with combination locker rental. The towel service allows you to get a shower towel for use during each visit. Towels can be picked up at the welcome desk. Please return towels in the designated bins. You may be asked for your Rec Center account number or name to verify.
  • As a courtesy, fitness towels are available for use at the 2nd floor fitness desk. Please return them to the designated bins after use.

  • Reservations are taken in person or over the phone at (304) 696-4REC.
  • Reservations are taken no more than one day in advance.

  • Facilities inside the building can be rented on an hourly basis. There are established discounted rental rates for student organizations and faculty/staff departments.

Lost and Found

  • Items Found in Facility:
    • Any item turned in as lost/stolen will be recorded in the lost and found logbook.
    • Wallets, checkbooks, credit cards and any items estimated to be valued more than $100.00 shall be recorded in the lost and found logbook and immediately put in the safe, then turned over to the Department of Public Safety.

Items Reported Lost

  • Patrons may report items lost at the Marshall Recreation Center. A record of the person’s name and contact information, the day and time the item was lost and a detailed description of the item shall be recorded in a section of the logbook.
  • When an item is turned in and matches the description of a lost item, the possible owner will be contacted.

Release of a Lost Item

  • Lost articles may be claimed any time the facility is open.
  • The claimant must make a positive identification.
  • At the end of each month, lost items that have been held for four weeks will be donated to charity.

Stolen Items

  • The owner of a stolen item should report the theft to the Building Manager, who will immediately contact the Department of Public Safety (6HELP).
  • The Building Manager shall immediately fill out an incident report and then contact all employees to assist in the effort to retrieve the stolen item(s).

Refunds/Cancellations

  • All refunds must be approved by staff member responsible for service/program.
  • A “request for cancellation” form must be completed in person at the member services desk.
  • Requests will be reviewed and approved then processed for refund. All payments will be refunded via a check. All refunds take approximately six weeks to process and a check will be mailed to address on the cancellation. All payroll deductions and electronic fund transfers will terminate after determined amount has been paid.

Membership/Lockers

  • Within one week of purchase, a membership is refundable, minus a $25 processing fee.
  • No memberships are refundable after the one week period without a physician-verified illness note.
  • All memberships/lockers paid with through an EFT are for a minimum of six months, which is stated on the EFT form that they filled out and signed.
  • Members must turn in their key tag in order to get refund.
  • Exceptions: individuals who are moving out of town or special circumstances.

Patron Disciplinary Policy

  • When a patron of the Marshall Recreation Center has violated a Campus Recreation or University policy, he/she is subject to disciplinary action. Examples of offenses include, but are not limited to: false use of identification, destruction of property, theft of property, trespassing, aiding or abetting, verbal or physical harm inflicted upon an employee or patron.
  • Procedure for reporting a violation:
    • Contact the building manager or nearest staff member.
    • The building manager will use discretion when approaching the party involved.
    • If necessary, Marshall University Police will be called.
    • The incident will be documented by filling out an incident report.
    • The party involved may be escorted out of the building.
    • The Assistant Director of Facilities will follow up by contacting individuals involved and will render a decision based on all available information.
    • If the incident involves a student, the Office of Judicial Affairs will be contacted and educational sanctions will be administered.
    • All documents will be filed and used in case of future infractions.
  • Possible Sanctions:
    • Patron receives verbal/written warning.
    • Patron receives suspension.
    • Patron’s membership is rescinded.
  • Multiple Incidents:
    • Second infraction results in immediate suspension.
    • Upon review, membership will be suspended or rescinded.

Damaged Equipment/Lost Towels

  • If equipment or towels are damaged or lost, patrons are responsible for paying for the assessed value of equipment.
  • Patrons may either immediately pay for the damaged or lost piece(s) of equipment or return within three days to pay the bill.
  • If payment is not received within three business days, access privileges will be suspended until payment is received.
  • There is a $10.00 service charge assessed for equipment/ keys that are not returned on the same day they were loaned.
